SUPPLEMENTARY MANUALS

A series of supplementary PEP manuals have been written to add to the units provided in the Maternal and Newborn Care manuals. These smaller manuals broaden the scope of the training material and address other important topics in the care of mothers and their newborn infants. The supplementary manuals are presented in the same user-friendly format as the basic PEP course. They consist of 5 or 6 units each and take 3 to 5 months to complete.

THE PERINATAL HIV/AIDS MANUAL (manual 3)

In 1999 a supplementary PEP manual on Perinatal HIV/AIDS was published. The aim of this manual is to provide nurses and doctors with the opportunity to improve their knowledge of the care of HIV infected pregnant women, , and their HIV exposed infants. The 5 units cover an introduction to perinatal HIV, the management of pregnancy, labour and delivery in an HIV infected woman, the management of her HIV exposed infant, and perinatal HIV counselling. This manual is available in either English or Afrikaans. The Perinatal HIV/AIDS manual was written in collaboration with 13 doctors, nurses and counsellors who have an interest and expertise in HIV infection in pregnant women and infants. The printed English version was updated in 2004. The on-line version should be updated by late 2004.

It also covers the principles and practice of kangaroo mother care, and a friendlier approach to care of the newborn infant. The 5 units address all aspects of mother and baby friendly care. The manual is available in English only.

It addresses maternal, stillbirth and early neonatal mortality rates in cities, towns and rural areas, the causes and avoidable factors, and ways of preventing many of these deaths. The manual is available in English only.

THE BIRTH DEFECTS MANUAL (manual 7)

This supplementary PEP manual will be published in 2004 and is available in English only. The 6 units address chromosomal, single gene, teratogenic and multifactorial causes of birth defects as well as the prevention of birth defects and the counselling of parents and patients with, or at risk of, birth defects. The manual is being used in the Genetics Education Programme of the Southern African Inherited Disorders Association to train genetic counsellors.

PLANNED SUPPLEMENTARY MANUALS

  1. Antenatal Care.
  2. Neurodevelopmental assessment.
  3. Care in Labour.

It is currently planned to translate the PEP manuals into Spanish, Portuguese and French in order that perinatal training opportunities can be made available in other countries.

The Paediatric Education Programme and the Childhood HIV Education Programme are similar self-help courses in the care of children, which are being developed using the same format as the Perinatal Education Programme. They aim to provide training opportunities for health care workers who care for older children. Training material from these projects should be available from 2006.
